The pervading message in the book of Proverbs is “Get Wisdom.” How does a man become wise? The first step is to trust and reverence the Lord! (Proverbs 1:7 & 8) Without first acknowledging the Lord, a man cannot become wise.

Proverbs was written primarily by Solomon, who, at the age of 20, became King of Israel. God was pleased with Solomon’s prayer in the third chapter of I Kings and granted him wisdom. I Kings 4:32 tells us that Solomon was the author of 3,000 proverbs and wrote 1,005 songs.

The 915 verses of the book of Proverbs are filled with instructions on many of the practical matters of daily life. If we apply all the principles in this book, we will live in harmony with God and with our fellowman.

If God granted Solomon’s prayer for wisdom, will he not do the same for us? James 1:5 admonishes us to ask the Lord for wisdom and He will grant it. I challenge you to first acknowledge the Lord, then follow the teaching in this book so that you may live your life in accordance with His will.
